Learn to Use The Power of Your Mind to Accelerate Your Weight Loss and Fitness Results

You might wonder what mind power has to do with fitness, health and weight loss, after all, isn’t it all about what you eat and how much you exercise?

Eating and exercise are certainly two thirds of the equation, but the remaining component is in your head, literally!

Motivation, desire, expectation and visualization are key concepts that, when understood and utilized, can be powerful ammunition that will accelerate your results.

Motivation to exercise and lose weight is probably what brought you to this page in the first place. However, maintaining or renewing your motivation to exercise can be a fleeting thing. It’s all too easy to become discouraged. There are a few tips on this subject in our article on motivation to exercise. Now I want to describe how mind power can drastically affect the speed and results of your fitness/weight loss program.

If you’ve never read Deepak Chopras’ views and explanations of the mind-body connection in such books as ‘Quantum Healing’ or ‘The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire’ you should really consider doing so. His explanations of mind power are very involved and insightful, much more so than I’ll write here as he has written whole books on the concept. This is really powerful stuff!

Expectation and visualization are not often mentioned in fitness programs but they should be as mind power, or the influence of the mind over the body is much stronger than most people realize.

When you focus the power of your mind on the goal you seek, you will begin to influence the events that will produce the desired results.

Sounds a little like magic but this power of positive thinking has worked in documented cases involving advanced and ‘incurable’ cancer (as well as other diseases) to spontaneously cause the body to heal itself when conventional medicine had failed.

Why not direct this power toward all of your goals?

I am going to give you some instructions on how to use this ‘mind power’, which everyone possesses but few take advantage of, to reach your fitness and weight loss goals.

* Draw a clear picture of your goals.

Your purpose (goal) in persuing a fitness plan should be written down. -eg- I will again be able to fit into a size 4 dress..(yeah right!, like I ever could!) or losing 15 lbs of fat or gaining the necessary strength or endurance to enter a competition. Your goals will be individual and they will be moving targets, that is when you achieve them (and you will) you set your sites on a new goal. The clear expectation that you will achieve your goals is a necessary part of ‘mind power’ so repeat it out loud every day.

* Adjust from mere hoping and wishing to ‘Expectation’.

Goals and program firmly in hand, your desire to achieve your goals become an expectation. You will drop that 25lbs., you will again fit into that favourite dress, you will do what is necessary to land that job (you see, this technique works for all areas of your life). This positive mindset goes beyond desire and represents your commitment to succeed.

* Visualization

Here’s where mind power really shines and it’s kind of fun. Paint an image in your mind of what you will look like and perform like upon reaching your goals. Take a ‘before’ picture to hang on fridge and visualize what the ‘after’ picture will look like. Focus on that vision with intense concentration and do it often, everyday in fact.

Clear goals, expectations and visualization will all help to create and sustain the drive to push forward. The war is won one battle at a time and you will win!

* Discipline

Ah, that naughty word, the lack of which causes many to falter. As failure is not an option in this scenario, you are going to follow the program faithfully. (don’t worry, it’s not that difficult) You will set aside the time each day that is best for you to workout and it will become your own religion. After a couple of weeks you will find that it becomes a habit and that is the key! Keep that vision in your mind. Remember that discipline will make the difference between success and failure.

* Practice, Practice, Practice!

Ok, this visualization and mind power thing might seem a little far fetched, but ask anyone who practices meditation and you will learn of increased ability to focus and decreased stress in addition to many other benefits. Ask how often they practice meditation and most will respond ‘daily’.

Every day you should set aside a short time to quietly put your mind power to work. Do it before your regular workout session if possible. Think of it is a form of meditation, almost self-hypnosis that will help you maintain your focus and reinforce your motivation. Sit quietly, relax your thoughts and body (don’t fall asleep), clear your head of the days chaos and concentrate on that body that will be yours. Absorb yourself in your visualization firmly believing it will come to pass.

And it will!

Law of Attraction and Going with the Flow

Manifesting your desires using the law of attraction gives you the means to realize your dreams and aspirations in life. Using this universal law, you can consciously create the life you want to have. You get to have a sense of control over the experiences in your life.

However, controlling situations or people around you is a major hindrance in your manifesting effort. You cannot make a person do something he/she does not want to do using the law of attraction. Nor can you make a current situation instantly reverse itself into something you want using the same concept.

The thing with the law of attraction is that you just have to allow things to happen. If your thoughts are focused on the end result of what you want, then that is what you will be getting. There is no need for you to worry how things will come to be, just have faith that you will eventually attract your desires.

Just go with the flow. Allow your ideal situation to unfold on its own. Your instinct (not your logic) will tell you what action is required, so be receptive. The universe does not make a mistake. As Max Ehrmann said in Desiderata, “And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.” The non-physical Abraham call this the law of allowing which says that “I am which I am and I am willing to let others be which they are.”

Yes it would have been easy to go with the flow if only Miss REALITY here doesn’t bite. It is what is happening in front of us that sends us to overdrive and grasping for control of the situation. That is why I never fail to include in my writings that manifesting with the law of attraction requires that you transcend reality and suspend doubt.

In The Power of Positive Thinking, Norman Vincent Peale related a story about a woman whose marriage was falling apart. It used to be a happy one but they were drifting apart and it had come to a point where he became interested in another woman. The woman asked her minister’s advice to save here marriage. She was told to have faith and to maintain a mental image of the happy times. So despite the sad and painful reality of her marriage, she visualized the activities they used to share. And you guessed it right, her marriage was saved. The story was used in the book to emphasize Peale’s formula of PRAYERIZE, PICTURIZE ACTUALIZE, but it also portrays how one should look beyond the current situation in order to manifest an ideal situation.

You have to see beyond the reality of the situation if you want to change your reality. I am not saying that you should be in denial of the current situation and tell yourself that it is not happening and pretend that everything is just peachy in your life. You also need to acknowledge what is really happening so that you will know that this is not the ideal situation for you. You can then use the law of attraction to manifest your ideal situation.

All of Peale’s books include true stories of the wonderful manifestations of the power of positive thinking. But I specifically  selected the one above because I once tried to emulate it in order to restore a relationship gone bad. Unfortunately for me, I did not get my happy ending like in the story because I hounded him, and I manipulated situations which drove him farther away from me. In other words, I wanted to CONTROL the situation.

Grappling for control is like swimming against the flow, it drains your creative energy and leads you nowhere. So relax, close your eyes, go with the flow with faith and you will open your eyes to your desired reality. The law of attraction works, you just have to let it be.

The Tricks Of Positive Thinking

Gee, we have all heard enough about the power of positive thinking, right? You only get about 4 million hits when you type in the key words of ‘positive thinking’ in an I-net Google search. Positive thinking—easier said than done? Of course it is and that is also why any real worthwhile ‘how-to” advice costs a second mortgage on a 6K sq-foot, ocean-front house in Malibu.

It is Christmas time and ‘tis the season for giving. So I am going to offer a few very good inside tips about this highly touted positive thinking thing, free for the reading. How’s that for a great holiday deal? At least write back and tell me they are useful!

I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t believe in the power of positive thinking (even masochists view pain as positive!) but then again I don’t know many experts who can tell you how to do it (or are at least willing to do that for free). That is because it is all a common sense thing and common sense is always difficult to explain or teach. You see it when you see it and use it when you have it.

Here are some very valuable insights for those who would like to get a better handle on their own ability to think more positively.

1. Most thinking is unconscious. Opps, we start out with a formidable obstacle. Brain research tells us that most of the physiological/mental thinking we do is unconscious, so how do we analyze the content of our own thinking to determine where it is positive or negative? Slowing down long enough to think about your own thinking is not easy in this nanosecond instantaneous world we live in, but you will get nowhere by continuing with the speed game. So like it or not, you must discipline yourself to slow down at times to think about what you are telling yourself about another person or event, and then slowly notice the results you are getting with your own feelings and outcomes. Once or twice and you are on the right path.

2. Things aren’t always as they first appear. You might be thinking your thoughts are positive when they are actually subtly negative, or at least negative enough to attract negative, undesirable consequences. Wanting to get over an illness, lose weight, beat out another person for a promotion, or rid a marriage of conflicts are not positive thoughts that will get positive results. Thinking about good health, getting to the right weight for you, becoming an excellent employee who deserves a promotion and doing something to create a happy marriage are positive thoughts. Of course it takes a lot of discernment of your own thoughts to finally notice the sometimes subtle difference between these separate thinking styles. Again, once or twice starts you on the right path.

3. You must have ‘negative’ to appreciate ‘positive.’ The Yang and Yin of life involve both positive and negative things, or at least this and that dualistic categories, against which we compare and contrast our experiences. We probably carry things a little too far with over-ascribing good and bad-like qualities to these opposite things like wealth and poverty, beauty and homeliness, and truth and fiction. Lessening the tendency to over-flavor things as positive or negative is a very good way to release the iron-like grip that negative thinking may have on you. After all, if you don’t experience dark dreary rain you probably can’t appreciate the brilliance and warmth of sunlight. As it turns out, they are both just different sides to the same coin, just like positive and negative thinking.

4. You usually fail before you succeed. Nobody that has mastered the art of positive thinking was born that way. They had to overcome lots of negative thinking before they could succeed at being able to influence there own thinking to be more positive and get more positive results…(in becoming an over night success during a ten-year trail period). It is hard work and a gradual process, so be patient so you can be more sensitive to recognizing the moment of transition between failure and success. If you are presently failing with too much negative thinking (or getting too many negative results from your thinking), it is mainly so you can learn to succeed with more positive thinking, maybe sooner than you think.

5. Questioning basic assumptions is good. Personally I believe common sense starts when you finally wake up to the unavoidable realization that what you think you know may not necessarily be so. Then you start questioning your own basic assumptions and other things you are certain to be so, only to find out the real truth, like some of these other useful insights. One good assumption to question in your pursuit of positive thinking is the real value of the consequences you are getting from whatever thinking you are doing. When you don’t like the results you are getting, just trace them back to the thinking that created them.

6. You don’t get what you want until you want what you have. This is so true that it is boring, but never-the-less there is a lesson that must be learned. One of the best caveats of accessing the power of The Secret (Law of Attraction), is that it is a very good practice to show appreciation of what you do have. Even when I was homeless, jobless. loveless and penniless, I did have good health humor and friends. I certainly don’t have it all now, but I do have much to be thankful for that I am not bashful or frugal in acknowledging and appreciating (or as our back door sign says. “We may not be all together, but together we have it all.”)

7. Don’t be too hard on yourself (unless you really deserve it!). Most of the time we are doing better than we imagine and are in fact making good progress at growing up and improving into our best self. This includes doing what we need to do in taking advantage of the power of positive thinking. Probably the only time you should beat yourself up is when you fall asleep at the wheel or forget to return from your break. Onward and upward.

Now try any two of these solutions to positive thinking and double your mind pleasure. Try them all and show others your enjoyment radiance. And if you have the time and generosity, tell them how you did it. Merry Christmas.
