Law of Attraction: Its Basic Premise and Application

The law of attraction is a new age concept that puts forward the notion that you can attract into your reality what is most predominant in your thoughts. It is therefore an application of the mind power phenomenon.

The premise of the law of attraction are the following:

  1. All things in the universe, including our thoughts, are energy vibrating at different frequencies. Therefore we are one with everything else.
  2. Increasing the intensity of a certain thought by keeping it pure, through repetition, verbal & written affirmations, mental images (visualization), belief and strong emotions will produce a very real experience for us in the subconscious level.
  3. The subconscious is the gateway to our connection with the entire cosmos. Once an experience is already real in the subconscious level, the subconscious mind causes the attraction into the material plane of the thing that matches the experience.

The law works even if your predominant thoughts are negative. Since it will attract the same into your life, your words, your attitude, your personality, your values & your environment will most likely reflect this negativity. So instead of blaming some external factors for the “misfortunes” you are currently experiencing, examine your thoughts instead. As they say, “everything is within, nothing is without.”

The law of attraction has come to be a self-empowerment tool in that it allows you the chance to lead your life where you always want it to be. It is also called conscious creation because through it, you can purposely & deliberately create your own ideal life by taking control & manipulating your thoughts.

So you can use this law with maximum benefits you must maintain a very good self-concept. You must value yourself high enough to believe in your dreams & aspirations. Applying the law needs faith in the unseen forces at work and in your confidence to change your life for the better. It will not take the time to work for you if you do not believe it could, and worst if you do not believe that you DESERVE what you trying to attract.

Creative Visualization

Visualization is the act of making mental images. In the book Creative Visualization, author Shakti Gawain said that it is not necessary to see a mental image even an idea or just thinking about it will do.

When I was in grade school, I had this huge crush on one of the boys in my class. I used to sleep very late at night because I spend my time imagining what it will be like spending my time with him. I would close my eyes and “watch a movie” in my mind about us.

I am pretty sure you can relate to the experience. You may have daydreamed about a vacation in the Bahamas, or see the end-result of something you are designing, or you may have also imagined something terrible borne out of fear.

We employ our abilities to visualize every time we imagine or think of something. We just didn’t know that by visualizing we can attract the very same experience into our material plane. Our visualization becomes creative when we purposely use it to create an experience we want into our reality.

How it Works

Most if not all new age experts agree that everything in this universe is made up of energy. Humans, animals or inanimate objects are vibrating energy at the core. The differences in appearance, size and shape, as well as the perceived boundary of objects are due to the differences in the speed & frequency of vibration. This makes us one in essence with everything around us.

Gawain attributed the creative power of visualization to the magnetic characteristics of the thought energy. However, some other experts in the field attributed the attraction of things into our reality to the magnetic characteristics of thoughts through the subconscious mind.

Claude M. Bristol said in The Magic of Believing that

perhaps the most effective method of bringing the subconscious into practical action is through the process of making mental pictures –using the imagination–perfecting an image of the thing or situation as you would have it exists in physical form.

I consider the subconscious mind as the gateway to our connection with the universe or God. Whatever it considered to be true is “beamed” out and caused the expansion & attraction of the same energy (the law of attraction). Events will eventually lead to the realization of the things or experiences visualized.

Just a tip, do not visualize or think of the event as if it is still going to happen in the future. See it as if it is really happening at that very moment. Pretend that you are already holding the object or feeling the emotions & sensations of the experience you want to materialize.

Lilian Too in Inner Feng Shui explained further how to make visualization more successful

The key to success in visualization is the ability to focus thoughts. The picture in your mind must be sharp & clear. The goal or situation as you want it to be must not be hazy & uncertain. There must be intensity of belief, relaxed concentration, & quite determination. The mental image must not be diluted by doubt or ambivalence. Your attitude must be positive and confident.

Positive Affirmation

Affirmation means “to make firm” It can be spoken, written or drawn and it is sometimes called suggestion, autosuggestion or self-suggestion

Positive affirmation is another technique to activate the law of attraction in a beneficial way. When you have determined what is it you really want to attract, declare your intention out to the universe or God. Then you make firm your intention by constantly acknowledging that you already have the very thing in your life right at that moment.

It is hard to say, “I am now earning $10,000 every month” when your mind knows you aren’t. Affirmations need to be repeated over and over and with as much emotion as you can muster so that the subconscious mind is “tricked” into believing that what you are really saying is true. However, it is hard to get thoughts into the subconscious mind when you are fully awake. Your conscious mind will immediately label your statement as untrue. I say affirmations out loud, because I feel as if I can overcome the voice of the conscious mind opposing to what I am saying.

The best time to do affirmations is when you are between the state of wakefulness & sleep, during meditation when your mind is most relaxed or during hypnosis when you are in a trance. However, if you want to affirm during the times when your conscious mind is most dominant, repeat your affirmations many times, put strong emotions into your words, & say it with strong conviction.

Personally, I prefer to make drawings about the things I want to manifest. The act of drawing allows me to focus on what I am doing & the picture I am trying to create. I am not an artist and all I can manage are simple objects. I even use stick men to represent persons. If I cannot draw it, I use symbols with vibrant colors instead.

Affirmations are not only for use with the law of attraction. They can be used to change your old mental programming, reverse your negative thoughts, develop self confidence or for improvement of general well being.

Emile Coue

Emile Coue was a French psychologist & pharmacist who pioneered the use of auto-suggestion as a method of cure. He formulated the famous self-suggestion (affirmation),

Everyday, in every way, I am getting better and better

Coue believes that by consciously repeating words or images to the subconscious, it can be ordered to obey the suggestion. His patients were cured by transferring their focus from mentality of illness to a mentality of cure through autosuggestion.

Here are some guidelines for effective and successful affirmations from James Lee Valentine, author of Pure Power:

  1. Personalize your affirmations
  2. State your affirmations in the positive
  3. State your affirmations in the present tense
  4. Keep your affirmations short
  5. State your affirmations with conviction
  6. Your affirmations must be sincere
  7. Your affirmations must be written
  8. Repeat your affirmations often

Most of use affirmations unconsciously and to our great disadvantage. Constantly complaining is a form of negative affirmation. By always saying, “I have no money to pay the bills” or “I am hopeless” you are
allowing the negative situation to dominate your thoughts and you are empowering it with your words. Remember: “As you say, so it shall be done”

Manifesting Abundance Though be Careful What You Wish For

What does it take to manifest abundance into someone’s life? For me manifesting joy takes no effort, there are so many simple things I get joy out of. As a matter of fact I lead quite an abundant simple life.

I’m talking more about big material things here like manifesting money - lots of it, business success, and living a contented life where everything’s taken care of.

Does attracting abundance take lots of meditation and positive affirmations or does it take a bit more than that? Is it as easy as setting an intention for abundance to materialize at our door step?

Well, meditation has, without a doubt, brought me inner peace and a change of perception. Positive affirmations set the mood for my day, and setting intentions enables me to goal set conceptually without getting caught up in every detail. These all work exceptionally well on a spiritual level.

What I do know that does work well in manifesting the big ‘stuff’ is: know what you want, focus, commitment, determination and the big one – do something. Also, if you’re not congruent with what you are trying to achieve, even if there’s a very, very tiny voice somewhere inside you wanting your attention, pay attention and listen. Work on what your inner voice is trying to tell you.

It may be a belief getting in the way. You might get all ‘fired’ up about an idea you have that’s totally new and just for an instant, you live your dream. What happens next takes a nanosecond. Doubt steps in, and fear and so the downward spiral begins until you’ve given up on the idea. This is an example of a negative belief getting in the way of what potentially could be a really, really great idea!

Your inner voice might also be telling you that you need to up-skill; meet more people; look more closely at what you truly value; or that it’s fear blocking your power to manifest. Sometimes we have a fear of not only failure but also fear of success.

On a more spiritual level manifesting abundance can take time, this depends of course on what it is you’re manifesting. As a matter of fact it can take an awful lot of time. An option would be to start something different, but what happens then is the wait for abundance begins…again…and possibly again.

Manifesting anything takes effort – sometimes a little and sometimes a lot, and then there are times ‘the guys upstairs’ (or maybe ‘the girls’ for you) deliberately place obstacles and blocks (including fear) in the way. This will test how serious, determined and creative you really are. It can be extremely demoralising and soul destroying to continually receive rejections for that book you want published, that CD you want to sing, that movie you’d like to star in. Have faith and trust in yourself that you can pull it off. You never know what’s around the corner.

If something doesn’t work, improve upon it, it may be that the only thing that needs changing is your perception. Get some coaching in – there are many types of coaching these days, there’s life coaching, business coaching, executive coaching, spiritual coaching, there’s me – transformational coaching, and many other types of coaching. Maybe get some meditation in.

There’s a flipside to all this manifesting. An expression I particularly love and has been true for me on occasion is ‘be careful what you wish for because you’re bound to get it’, and it may not be what you expect. Instead, your manifesting may bring an abundance of frustration and heartache with it.

Weigh up your wish list, look at what you’re trying to manifest with new eyes – and yes, ‘be careful what you wish for’, for it may not be what it seems.

Sometimes life can appear so complicated.

Practice Positive Self Talk and Affirmations

Practicing self talk means giving purpose to your positive reinforcement, motivation and recognition. This is the same talk you would give a friend so be kind and give it to yourself. Congratulate yourself when you have a success and remember all your abilities, accomplishments, strengths and skills. I suggest you make yourself an accomplishment board or journal and record all your successes — both small and large. Review your progress periodically and acknowledge where you have gone and keep an eye on where you are still going.

Use your self talk as a tool for success. Make it work for you. What you repeatedly say to yourself has a profound impact on your self worth and performance as well as eventual successes. Remember that your subconscious records all your thoughts and triggers physiological responses to match the images and thoughts you have of yourself. Make this work for you by keeping your self talk positive and reinforcing it with positive affirmations. For example, I did a great job on the research project my boss asked me to do. The research gave him the valuable information he needed to make an informed decision. I enjoyed doing this research and look forward to being asked again. My work is done in a professional manner and informative and complete.

As well as keeping your thoughts positive, it is imperative that you stop the negative chatter. Your mind records the negative chatter as easily as it does the positive talk. Your subconscious believes your negative chatter when it is repeated in your mind over and over. If you catch yourself using negative chatter, stop and rephrase what you said in a positive manner. Eliminate the negative words. Focus on using positive terms and affirmations.

Make your positive self talk and communications an everyday habit. A habit is created if you do something 21 days in a row. It is truly a very short time to focus and create a habit of ensuring positive self image. Try making small changes in your vocabulary. Substitute the phrase “I will try” with “I will”, or “I should do” with “I will do”. Try saying “I want or desire to” or “I choose to” instead of “I must”. “I can” instead of “I can’t”. Just the shift in some of our common terminology makes a huge difference in our subconscious and self image. Watch what you say during the day and see how many words that you say have a negative connotation to them. Learn how you can rephrase those statements as you acknowledge them.

Focus your positive thoughts with affirmation statements. These are the reminders that will help you achieve your goals and success. They are the positive mental sticky notes that will motive your mind to work for you instead of against you.

Here are a few tips on how to use the powerful affirmation tools as mental reminders. * Use personal statements. Use “I” or your own name. * Keep your statement short, sweet and to the point. * Phrase your statements in a positive way. Remember the mind accepts the truth as it is worded. Use only positive words — leave out the negatives. I.e. I will not be late for work today vs. I will be on time for work today. * Use a positive emotion in your statement. This excites me or I feel wonderful. Positive emotion strengthens the affirmation. * Phrase affirmation statements as facts instead of a wish. Complete your statement as if the goal has already been attained. Your mind believes mental messages and works to make them a reality even if they are not right now. * State your affirmations at least 6-8 times during the day. Start by waking up with a positive thought, in the shower, brushing your teeth, driving to work, taking a lunch break, before going into a meeting, cooking dinner, getting ready for bed. There are literally hundreds of opportunities throughout the day when you can think of a quick affirmative thought. It is very important to start and end your daily with positive affirmations. It sets the tone for the day and closes the day with a positive thought. Repetition is the key to habit. Repetition enhances self confidence and stimulates your mind to help achieve your goals.

I cannot emphasize enough the power self talk and positive affirmation statements can have upon the quality of your life. They propel you towards your goals that you have identified and desire to accomplish. Even if you work hard every day, without goals, your life is without direction. It is like a ship without a rudder sailing aimlessly through the seas.

Use these powerful tools of positive talk and positive affirmation statements to help speed and direct you toward your dreams and desires.
