Meditation Guide: How To Meditate On Self Control

  • How to relax and focus instantly in any situation
  • Natural deep breathing opens your higher consciousness
  • Remain cool and calm in any crisis
  • Simple step by step guide

I’ve listened to a lot of people concerning meditation. First, let’s recognize that there are all kinds of meditation. The problem that I’ve encountered is that people have trouble getting into meditation and staying with it because they don’t know how to take the benefits with them. This guide is meant to help you meditate for instant self control and focus in any situation.

Your Head Knowledge: Intention

When you exercise, the results you want are to be healthier, shapelier, and stronger. When you eat right, the results you want are to be healthier with the necessary fuel reserves for all your strenuous activities. Altogether, these activities make you resistant to aging while helping you to concentrate, perform, and think better.

The actual purpose of meditation is to focus all of your energy, experience, and learning that you’ve gathered towards your specific intention. Every kind of meditation should provide you with specific intention – or at least it should.

For example, in martial arts chi kung meditation, we build bioenergy (Chi) in our outer extremities through exercise. In martial arts meditation, we take that bioenergy and channel the circulation through the energy vessels through focused intent.

In turn, our meridians become energized and can be used for even more focused martial arts practice. As you see, “forging our bodies in the fire of our spirits” is not just Chinese Folklore; through this feedback mechanism of exercise and meditation, this is what really happens.

Intention: the key to Meditation

There are all kinds of meditations for raising the consciousness to shape reality like the Kabbalah and remote viewing/influencing. Other esoteric meditations like Transcendental Meditation help the practitioners become “siddhis” or accomplished ones, so they accomplish the focused intent of invisibility, levitation or infinite strength, etc.

There are mainstream kinds that raise the consciousness for remote healing like Emotional Freedom Techniques (which takes advantage of the higher guage symmetry of the energy meridians as in chi kung).

All kinds of fascinating things can be accomplished by raising the consciousness. The most common thread between all of them is focused intention. You can go to all the fancy meditation retreats and take all the classes, but what will you take with you once you return to the real world? How will that experience serve you in real life?

Let’s face the facts: Those more advanced accomplishments take time, something you feel you may not have. From what I’ve experienced, most people just want to take a few meditation or yoga classes here and there when they have time on a vacation, then they hope that experience will somehow provide the control that they need when taking on a chaotic world with so much crisis at hand. Most of the time, that meditation retreat becomes nothing more than a beautiful memory.

I believe you want more than that.

Your Heart Knowledge: How to program yourself to relax

Different schools of meditation all have different methods of keying the relaxation response. Some experts advise that you find a quiet, comfortable place at a certain time of the day as you touch your fingers together in a certain way.

What they’re all trying to do is get you into a routine of trained autonomic relaxation, but it’s just not practical if they don’t tell you how to take that experience with you wherever you go. What if you’re in a noisy, uncomfortable place and your hands are full at rush hour, but you need to maintain calm, collected focus to find your way through busy traffic - then suddenly there’s a crash in front of you?

Not to worry: There is a common set of autonomic relaxation responses that most people have forgotten. Because part of our culture is based on stress, we’ve been trained away from our natural abilities since grade school.

Let’s face a discouraging fact: There are no academic requirements for relaxation and focused concentration classes to deal with stress in school or life in general, yet academic officials expect kids to “deal with it” (by taking drugs).

The following set of relaxation responses are keyed through natural, deep breaths towards the diaphragm or solar plexus. Here’s how to easily slide into relaxation mode:

1. Breathe deeply and naturally.

Remember to take deep, natural, slow breaths only through your nose towards the solar (celiac) plexus as you perform each relaxation response. Your nose is your natural filter to pollutants. Remember to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Feel your breath being drawn deep into your lungs by your stomach muscles and diaphragm.

Your deep breathing keys all of the responses, so they all fall into place. By training these responses you learn to relax automatically.

The solar plexus is the bundle of nerves that cause people the most trouble when trying to relax because they breathe incorrectly, so they have shallow breathes or hyperventilate. When you breathe deeply and naturally using your stomach muscles, the solar (celiac) plexus becomes your ally in maintaining control.

Even if your stomach muscles tense up in a “fight or flight” situation, you’re still using them to breathe correctly and act accordingly.

2. Hold your back in an upright posture.

Standing or sitting in this position helps keep you aware and awake during your relaxation, so you create control over your autonomic responses. If you must lay down, you can use a pillow under your back to hold a naturally straight posture. (Preferably, this exercise should be done in an upright position.) Breathe deeply and naturally.

3. Relax your shoulders.

The first thing I see people do when asking them to hold an upright posture is that they tense their shoulders. Relax your shoulders in order to relax the brachial plexus on both sides of your neck. Tension in the shoulders leads to tension in the neck, then tension in the head which leads to stress ailments like headaches and dizziness. Make the bundle of nerves around your neck relax, and they will help you relax. Breathe deeply and naturally.

4. Hold your head up, loosely.

Feel as if your head is supported by a string from above. Your head is upright, but feels free as if it is floating. This response allows enhanced, circulation of fluids and subtle energies going to and from your head. Breathe deeply and naturally.

5. Relax your vision.

Relax your focus as if gazing blankly along a distant horizon of the ocean. Breathe deeply and naturally.

6. Relax your jaw.

Allow your jaw to relax by letting it drop slightly. Coupled with steps 4 and 5 above, these actions relax cranial nerves 1 to 5 which allow your neural patterns to slow down, thus allowing you to further relax. Breathe deeply and naturally.

7. Place the tip of your tongue gently against the roof of your mouth.

The tongue should be relaxed, but not touching the teeth. The relaxed tip of the tongue should be on or near the center of the palate (between soft and hard palates). This action is easier when the jaw is slightly dropped, another reason for step 6. Breathe deeply and naturally.

According to Chinese chi kung theory: “..when the tongue touches the roof of the mouth cavity, yin and yang vessels (yin in front, yang in back) are connected and the (chi circulation) circuit is complete. This tongue touch is called ‘Da Chiao’ or building the bridge. The tongue acts like a switch in an electrical circuit…” (”Nei Dan,” Ch. 3, p. 48, Chi Kung Health and Martial Arts by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming.)

You may say that you’re not into chi kung meditation, so why do step 7? In fact, this is a natural, albeit, subconscious response by everyone throughout the day; we’ve all known since birth to “complete the circuit” in this manner, but a stressful culture trains unnecessary stretching and and tensing of the tongue and surrounding oral muscles which causes chi stagnation. This can lead to chronic physical and mental ailments.

In Chinese Medical Chi Kung theory, your tongue is an extension of your heart. When you relax your tongue, you relax your heart. Breathe deeply and naturally.

Your Deep Breathing is Key

Remember, your deep breathing keys all of the relaxation responses at once. All you’re doing is putting back all the natural autonomic functions that stressful culture took away from you. Once you have correctly trained steps 1 – 7 above, one deep breathe is all it should take activate all of the above relaxation responses, so “all of the pieces fall into place” immediately.

I imagine that you may have already mastered all of your relaxation responses. Since you were born with them, all you’re doing is “remastering” them. Now, you know how to take the benefits of meditation with you to any situation to meet the challenge of a chaotic world with no trouble…

The Universal Law of Reflection

Wow! Another new year? Where did all the time go? As you look back, did you achieve all that you set out to do last year? Are you where you want to be in all aspects of your life? How long did you follow through on your New Year’s resolutions? Or did they sputter out within a few days or a few weeks?

Well, now we get to start all over again. The good news is 2008 is the year of New Beginnings! In numerology,it is a ‘10’ year (2+0+0+8 = 10) which provides the positive energies of: creativity, expansion, progression and future oriented, leadership with courage, wisdom, and knowledge, interactive, self sufficient, high aspirations, and magnetic forces to assist in our creations. So in 2008 you can take all the lessons you’ve learned and completed from the past and apply them so you can consciously create your future. And this leads us to the Universal Law of Reflection . . . is your life reflecting back what you envision?

The Law of Reflection is ultimately the representation and manifestation of “As Above, So Below”. The Universe will reflect back to you what you shine into it. You may want to create ‘be-ing’ and living ‘Heaven on Earth’ within you and around you. However, that may not what is necessarily showing up in your life if what you are sending to the Universe is somehow skewed. The Universe reflects back to you what you are giving to it through the expression of Self whether it is in your thoughts, words, feelings, or actions. Remember, all of these are energetic vibrations which ultimately manifest as form in your life.

So if your life is not what you envision, ask yourself where are you out of alignment with your dreams. If you desire love in your relationships and life, are you expressing love to yourself and others? And, of course, you must begin by loving yourself first then share the love with others; not the other way around. Do you love yourself free of conditions or are you judgmental and continually beat yourself up? What is the nature of your self talk? Do you even pay attention to the thoughts, words, feelings, and actions that you have toward yourself? Many don’t. This is the opportunity for you to become more conscious with your energy toward Self and others.

I love the Awareness Jar process to help people become more conscious about what they are truly creating within and around themselves. Find a big empty jar and list the types of negative energy you put out to the Universe. As you think, say, feel, or do anything negative that you have identified and want to change, you pay the jar $________ (decide on an amount that stretches you!). Some examples include: expressing lack or limitation, saying “I always or never”, “I’ll try”, “I don’t know”, “I can’t”,
“I should or you should”, “I’m stupid”, or saying “I’m sorry” as an automatic response or when you don’t mean it, feel you’re not good enough or worthy, think something is too hard, do not fully commit, gossip about others or continue passing on hearsay, not deal with a person directly, engage in negative name calling, or take things personally.

The moment you become aware of any of the above negative expressions or behaviors, immediately identify a counteractive positive expression or behavior. Now, tell the Universe to Cancel or Delete the negative energy you originally sent, then send forth your new positive energy by claiming it as if it is occurring in the present tense. Initially, this allows your small egoic fear-based mind to be conditioned and uplifted into your Divine Mind and you will eventually feel it, know it, and believe it. You want to give your current mind a new job. The new job is to catch what you are honestly thinking, saying, feeling, and doing then to replace it with what you truly desire. You do it immediately as it happens. If you are at work or someplace else, you write it down and make sure to pay the jar when you get home! And no cheating! Commit to follow through on this for a minimum of 30 days with 90 days being optimum or until you have broken your old mind set and habits. Once you’re done, go out and have fun with your $s!

If you are putting out to the Universe that you want love but doing the opposite of what you intend, the Universe will reflect back to you the energy you actually sent forth. Think of the Universe as your mirror. “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the ____________ of them all?” If you are not the most lovable of them all (to yourself) then you cannot be that with others or expect the Universe to bring it to you. But the Universe will support you by bringing you opportunities to see where you are and are not love. This shows up as the people and situations that bring you the experiences and lessons about love.

I found I kept attracting the same type of man in my personal Beloved relationships. I desired a relationship that was full of love, honor, respect, cherishing, nurturing, fun, compassion, passion, integrity, openness, intra-dependence (versus co-dependence), and honest communication. What I actually created was so far from what I desired that my body had to get my attention by becoming physically sick thus showing me, “This is not it!” The reflection was so intense so I had to look at why this was occurring. I knew it was not about who he was or was not; it was my journey to explore, learn, and heal what was coming to the surface for me to address.

In being willing to go into the awareness no matter where it took me of why the relationship was showing up the way it was, I was able to be honest with myself even if the Truth hurt. In being compassionate with myself, I was able to be present with the True energetics – the thoughts, words, feelings, and actions that I had rather being judgmental of what I was discovering from the past or what I was presently creating. The Universe reflected back to me where I needed to refine and learn how to love, respect, and honor of my Self more deeply and where I needed to communicate with my Self more openly and honestly. As I did this, I was able to admit the relationship I was in no longer served me; I experienced, learned and healed what I needed to so I could attract the man I truly desire. And interestingly enough, each man I date now is closer and closer to whom I envision my Self to be with in a committed Beloved relationship.

Remember the Universe provides you with an infinite amount of possibilities and opportunities; it does not create your life, you do. What will the Universe reflect back to you in 2008; what’s in alignment and what’s out of alignment within your expressions? What is it that you will consciously choose to create in 2008? It’s your choice – you are the Co-Creator of your world!

Abundance

In order to have ‘more’ of anything (or everything) we need to stretch our boundaries and our imagination. I invite you to adopt Abundance rather than Prosperity as an idea, as this aligns you with the possibility of having so much more.

When you embrace and understand Abundance as inclusive of prosperity, having ‘more’ means having more financial freedom, greater wellbeing, relationships that enhance your life, and abundant opportunities for expanding your joyful expression. So begin by honouring the Abundance that is always readily available to you - your breath. It’s free, and life-giving. The breath infuses us with Life and creates an abundant flow as a life-giving stream. With awareness, we are able to draw more from the breath and, therefore, more from our lives. So I suggest you now take a few slow breaths as this will assist you to assimilate this bigger idea and anchor it deeply in your Being.

Infusing new information more deeply into your consciousness via the breath allows you to hold it more deeply. As you inhale, you enliven all your cells which expands your capacity to think. So - breathe, infuse, allow, use.

Then take a ‘wide-angle lens’ view of Abundance. This means speaking to your inner-knowing to support you to arrive at your understanding of Abundance which then paves the way for you to enjoy increasingly greater Abundance in every area of your life.

Abundance is the stage of integral wholeness where we are satiated with our own delight. It is the stage in our evolution as human beings where life ceases to be about external creation, and is about internal rapture - existing in an increasingly spacious container where we create worlds, within and without, that deeply nourish our spirit and make our hearts sing; where we live gloriously with ourselves and others. We are Abundant.

Abundance is not so much about what we have, but what we are and how we feel. When we live in ‘what is right with me and my world’ and not ‘what is wrong with me and my world’, we are beginning to awaken to this possibility. Appreciation for, rather than berating against, is an essential state of being we need to arrive at. Even the times that are challenging are gifts that we are able to harvest as great learning in order to gift ourselves with ‘more’ Abundance. Being awake to this core knowing is the essence of Abundance.

So, what does all this mean? When we recognise - or are willing to approach the possibility - that we are infinite, not as an oft-repeated hypothetical or ’spiritual’ idea that has lost its meaning, but in a very practical and demonstrable way, we know ‘I am the source of my experience’. Translated, this means that as I access my joy and inspiration continuously in the present, I create my Abundant Now and my Abundant Future.

Taking full responsibility for where you place your attention is a skill that is easy to develop. Being willing to notice the effect of your thoughts, is the key here. You may like to experiment with this for 5 minutes each a day. Just take the time to notice where you are placing your attention - what you are thinking about - and you will become aware of how you’re feeling: whether you are feeling increasingly vibrant, or whether you’re feeling depleted. You will then realise how much you may be keeping yourself restrained, tied to struggle of your own making.

This is where the magic happens: you now have the opportunity to play the game of increasing your Abundance, simply by changing where you place your attention.

Remember: You are your greatest asset. Really know that. Cultivating a wondrous and deeply appreciative relationship with yourself is the vehicle that carries you forward towards your Abundance. When you are filled with the joy of exploring ‘you’ in ever-deeper ways, you create ripples that turn to waves of glorious delight, Cultivating a relationship with yourself that is founded on ‘inner seeing’ and reflection, holding yourself with gentleness as you plant seeds of new possibilities, and being excited by the burgeoning possibilities and the joy that unfolds, creates the flow of Abundance.

Abundance is a flow of new inspiration. New inspiration nourishes our imagination, and sets our boundaries free. The more boundaries we dissolve, the more restrictions we let go of, the more we begin to stand in our self-determined freedom. In this way we ignite our increasing passion, which creates wonder and this feeds our genius. Living in our genius, rather than our ‘average’ and ‘good enough’, is the launching pad from which we establish Abundance as a living reality. It is only when we feel BIG, brimming over with our self-generated joy, deeply nourished from the inside, and standing in our now and offering this as our gift to ourselves, our world, our families and our friends, that - finally - Abundance will flow outward and inward in ever-increasing possibilities.

The wondrous state of Abundance is an internally generated state of celebration that flows as a river in its fullness (from you) towards Life. This imprint of fullness, inspiration and joy is inscribed and described within your being, and imprinted externally. The action completes itself - Life completes this action - and you receive Abundance as a realised state of living where you are amply rewarded.

Abundance is now the flow of giving and receiving, from within and without, that we continuously exchange. Abundance is experienced as a state of deep nourishment. There is a rising heart-swell that embraces all in its vastness and you are ‘more’ and ‘more’ is yours.

Share this ‘more’ and feel the swell of Abundance.

Puree the flesh of 2 mangoes (about 2 cups), stir 1 teaspoon of baking powder into 225g (2 cups) almond meal, and gently beat five eggs in a bowl. Combine all ingredients, pour into a greased cake tin and bake for about 1 hour at 180o C.

Cool 10 minutes before turning out.

It is my experience that the more I joyously share, the more flows back to me. So, I offer you this divine recipe that a friend offered me. Enjoy the gifts of Abundance, and feel the increasing swell of giving and receiving delight. Enjoy.
