Achieving Success In The 21st Century: The “New” Rules of Engagement

All the “sure” boats to success have seemingly gone down. On a daily basis I hear people muttering a new belief: “Success just isn’t possible right now.” The drive to achieve ones goals, dreams and aspirations have been chucked overboard as impossible rubbish and have been replaced with a new belief: “It’s a desperate time where the best one can hope for is to just make it through without losing everything.”

The truth is that everyone still wants to achieve success today more than ever. And, it is not only possible but achievable! Our hopes, dreams and goals are still residing inside of us waiting to be unleashed but most people have lost their courage to trust themselves and to act upon their own instincts. We, the people are waiting for our World Leaders and experts to figure it out for us. We stand by waiting for them to deliver a “new way” to get us out of this rut when the power to bring about change is within each of us. The truth is that the world leaders, experts and we, the members of society cannot exist without each other. We have a shared and collective co-responsibility and ability to bring about positive change.

The one irrevocable truth that has emerged during this time of tumultuous “change” is that a new set of rules of engagement is required to bring us back home to hope, inspiration, motivation and success once again.

In my practice as a Sustainable Success coach, I have successfully assisted many people to continuously create success during this current economic and emotional time by using my “New Rules of Engagement” for a new era of commerce for sustainable success. Take a look at the “old way” versus the new way and give them a try. Many, including myself, are achieving new and continued successes in spite of what many perceive as the worst economic times of our lifetime.

OLD RULES OF ENGAGEMENT/COUNTERPRODUCTIVE:

1. Defensive Strategies: This creates antagonism, adversarialism and perceived “bad faith” efforts. Using defensive tactics is a fear-based strategy that creates opponents rather than partners for lasting wealth and well-being.

2. Negotiating Using Right vs. Wrong: Creates conflict and prevents harmony where mutual benefit and gain can emerge resulting in successful outcomes.

3. Power-Over Advantage: No longer do we see survival of the fittest based upon sheer strength. It is the determined and open-minded who are willing to negotiate from peace rather than fear that will produce long term gains for all concerned.

4. Non-Transparency: Breeds fear and lack of trust. No longer does non-transparency work to produce a sustainable bottom line or future wealth and well-being economy for individuals, corporations or relationships.

5. Competitive Take-Over: Working from a primary model of competitive elimination creates a lack of opportunity between individuals and entities that can gain benefit from each other’s strengths and abilities.

NEW RULES OF ENGAGEMENT/PRODUCTIVE

1. Neutralizing Strategies: Examining, expressing and striving for the middle ground. Remember that each person’s “position” or “pole” is the variation of the same thing. For example: A coin has two sides: a head and a tail. But the coin cannot be a coin without each side. Do not attempt to disprove the other’s “side”; but recognize that each side has validity and strive to bring them together in harmony rather than insisting only one side is valid. This avoids chaos and creates stabilization and harmony.

2. Negotiate Through Open-Minded Information Sharing: There is no such thing as right or wrong. There is interpretation of facts and figures. Be willing to hear, ponder and understand the other side’s interpretation of facts, figures, information etc. Understanding their mindset and sharing yours is the bridge to creating shared resolutions and successful outcomes.

3. Relationship Building: Achieve a neutral position and condition of mutual benefit for long-term gain for all concerned by looking at every interaction, negotiation, situation and event as a long-term prospect. Approaching situations from a relationship building attitude creates cooperation rather than opposition that will not provide sustainable success for any of the parties directly or indirectly involved.

4. Diplomatic Transparency: Transparency is having the courage to own your own truth and then have the willingness to share it. Truth is the opposite of fear which is the only pathway to sustainable success be it financial or relationship. Withholding truth breeds fear and lack of trust. Having the courage to share your truth is the beginning of true self-trust, intimacy and sustainable success. Diplomatic Transparency is knowing what, when and how to share your truth with compassion.

5. Non-Monism Commerce: Understand and work from a mind-set of knowing that there is not any one sole source from which positive growth, expansion and success can come from. Too many of us lock onto one prospect or source as “the one” and hold onto it so tightly that potentially superior alternative opportunities are missed. Keep working the “deal” in front of you, but continue to cast your net wide and far, opening yourself to other prospects. Have confidence in your offering and know when to pass on an opportunity that isn’t unfolding according to your values. Trust that there is always an abundance of opportunity that can fill the space that you’ve just opened.

The successful 21st Century entrepreneur is one who understands what the new “sure thing” is: It is acting upon the TRUTH of your own values and having the courage, conviction, persistence and integrity to hold onto that truth. From your position of passionate integrity you will achieve the seemingly “impossible” and will be a significant mover in bringing forth the new 21st century model of commerce. The model which is built upon: integrity of self-trust and truth, faith rather than fear, strategic alliance rather than hostile competitiveness and, finally, the certainty that there exists in life a naturally occurring constant state of opportunity for the achievement of sustainable wealth and well-being.

“It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are.”

Activate Your Own Successful Stimulus Recovery Plan

Are you waiting for the stimulus plan to kick in to solve your personal wealth and well-being woes? Waiting for a plan to work that was developed by some source outside of yourself is not going to provide you with the abundance, security and serenity that you want to achieve! The answer is within you this very moment and is waiting to be unleashed.

I can guide you in unleashing your inherent creative and intellectual abilities that will actualize a new life of fulfilling and lasting success. The truly successful person is one who gets PROACTIVE in designing and implementing their own plan that encompasses their own beliefs, values, needs, wants and desires. Here is how you get out of “lack” and into abundance.

The first step is to move out of the conditioned behavior of “self-debting” that has been a mainstay of our society for so long and which has finally proven to be unsustainable. Here are some of the signs of a self-debtor:

* PROCRASTINATION: putting your life on hold pending some outside event that you don’t have control over.
* Not asking for what you want or need.
* Giving what you do not have available to give.
* Neglecting yourself by not having: healthy nutrition, exercise, personal time, etc.
* Lack of assertiveness.

Procrastination is one of the biggest forms of “self-debting” that will cause the under earning of the wealth and well-being you are seeking to achieve.

To take you out of “lack” and into the manifestation of a personal stimulus recovery plan that will keep you abundantly fulfilled is the goal of my sustainable success model. The approach is to achieve a balanced interplay between the following four areas:

1. PHYSICAL WELL-BEING:

* Eat Regularly and Healthfully. Great nutrition is fuel for a brilliant mind and body. Do give up at least one unhealthy habit that will relieve and stimulate your body, mind and pocketbook.
* Get Out Into Nature: There are proven powerful healing, restorative benefits to the sunlight, plants, and animals of our Mother Earth.
* Engage In Joyful Activities: Have some fun! Joy expands the heart, soul and mind. There are plenty of fun activities to engage in that are little to no cost. When short on time I, myself, love to pop into an exotic fish store, bead store, or toy store and play. Or with more time, I go out to run at the beach; dolphin watch; bowl or bar-b-que with friends or go dancing. Find your bliss!

2. FINANCIAL WELL-BEING:

* Take Some Time To Get Strong Clarity On Your Primary Goal And Purpose: Now is the time to reevaluate your values and goals. Financial well-being is creating your own sense of security and freedom to live a life of passion and serenity. Uncover what that is for you.
* Know What You Can Give And Don’t Give What You Can’t Afford To Give: Giving what you can’t afford will only create scarcity for you and others.
* Trade And Barter Goods And Services: There is much community joy in sharing with each other what we have. We all have something we don’t want or need any longer that is valuable to someone else and vice-versa. Be proactive in creating an opportunity for bartering/exchanging and recycling.
* Be Creative In Looking For Alternatives To Getting What You Want That Doesn’t Cost More Than You Can Comfortably Afford: One example I heard recently: A woman wanted to go to a black tie event (joyful activity for her); but didn’t have a great handbag to match her dress and couldn’t really afford to buy a new one. She found an online store that rents designer bags! It was a win-win for everyone.
* Be Proactive In Finding Financial Opportunities To Grow Your Wealth And To Promote Yourself. There are plenty of opportunities out there if you are open to them. The growing strength and popularity of social networking and marketing affords a very low cost to entry with maximum results.

3. SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING:

* Engage In Activities That Bring You Peace, Clarity And Serenity: Whatever the practice is that feels good to you IS the most beneficial one that will expand your capacity to create, manifest, live and love. Whether it be: meditation, prayer, chanting, journaling, creating art, cooking, etc, engage in it however many times per month that is right for you. There is no wrong way to spiritually engage… just do it! And reap the rewards.
* Be Of Service Where And When You Can And Be Anonymous About It.

4. RELATIONSHIP WELL-BEING:

* Take Time To Be With Friends, Family, Colleagues And Community. Overworking, underplaying and avoiding relationships will not achieve sustainable wealth and well-being.
* Verbally Acknowledge the Love, Respect, Admiration, and Job Well-done You Have For Those In Your Life.
* Actively Listen To All Those Who Come In Contact With You Each Day.
* Seek To Find The Similarities And Not The Differences In All Your Relationships.
* Participate In Relationships Where You Can Genuinely Give And Receive Support.
* Practice Courageous, Compassionate Communication In All Your Affairs.

Sustainable Success comes from co-communing compassionately with each other in an openly sharing environment without fear of judgment or competition. We are all interdependent upon each other more now than ever and it is imperative for the ushering in of a new era of Sustainable Wealth and Well-being.

The Dirty Dozen: 12 Ways That We Sabotage Our Success

Out of the many different ways that we can sabotage our own success, these twelve are the most common. All of us are guilty of these behaviors at various times, but knowledge of them gives us the power to start to banish them from our lives.

1. Ignore your own strengths and weaknesses.

We all have many individual attributes, but it is pointless trying to be someone or something that we are not. As Peter Thompson, the great motivational speaker says, “People will only do who they are.”

Don’t ignore reality. Learn who you are and build your business or career accordingly.

2. Stop learning.

For many people, the very idea of learning is something that they left behind at school or college. They don’t read. In their jobs they only know one way. Their way.

Successful people are universally sponges for information. They read, listen to tapes, scour the Internet and spend their whole lives learning.

The best investment anyone can make in their business, career or life is in their own ongoing education. If you are spending less than $200 a year on learning new things, you are short-changing yourself.

3. Believe that you can make it for free.

‘Make $1000 a week with no outlay!’

We’ve all seen the ads. By all means study them and analyze their sales and copywriting techniques. But don’t believe them.

No person or business can succeed without intelligent and consistent investment. Some online endeavors may be able to manage on less capital than many traditional businesses, but they still need something.

Sure you can operate an affiliate mini site on a free web host, with free email accounts and do all the writing and coding yourself. Trouble is, the result is guaranteed to look amateurish and your chances of making sales virtually zero.

Don’t be cheap. If it is worth doing, it is worth doing properly.

4. Try to get before you give.

We live in a gimme-gimme world. It is so easy to have a take-take attitude. Well, why not? There is so much available, why shouldn’t we get our share first?

Successful people don’t think that way. They see the value of the long term. Anyone can get a short-term benefit, but at what cost? Trust and respect are built by giving, not by taking. These two little words are the foundation stone of any successful business or person.

Whether you are offering free advice or help to a fellow entrepreneur, or delivering far more than your customers expect, think of the long term.

Build your business on a firm foundation. After all, there is a lot of truth in the axiom, ‘what goes around, comes around.’

5. Don’t set goals.

What do you need goals for when you can play it by ear? Isn’t all that goal stuff just new-age mumbo-jumbo?

No it isn’t. Without a clear objective you can never reach your target. How many times have you heard a soldier being commanded ‘Ready … Fire.’ There are always two little words in the middle: ‘Take Aim’. Imagine the consequences otherwise!

Every successful person has mastered the art of setting goals.

As Martha Lupton put it, ‘To get anywhere, strike out for somewhere, or you’ll get nowhere.’

6. Don’t focus.

In any given day we have thousands of thoughts, hundreds of memories, scores of outside influences, dozens of helpful ideas, tens of items on out to-do lists. But of all these things, only one is important enough to take our full attention, right at this moment.

High achievers have mastered this art. They have the ability to focus 100% of their mind, creativity, intuition and experience into a single laser beam that burns to the heart of the problem. Then they move on to the next.

But which problem to start with? Two books that are very helpful in teaching you to identify what is important, and what is merely a time waster, are ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen Covey, and, ‘The 80-20 Principle’, by Richard Koch.

7. Hate change.

Put simply, it is far easier to sit back and do what you know, than to innovate.

Yet business or business person who is content to let things carry on as they always did will quickly find to their cost that the world doesn’t wait with them.

‘Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or to the present are certain to miss the future.’ John F. Kennedy.

8. Try once, then stop.

We are all guilty of this at some time. If at first you don’t succeed, give up.

Success doesn’t see it that way at all. The road to success is almost never paved. It is full of potholes, littered with the blown down trunks of deserted dreams and blocked by obstacles. But there is gold at the end, and unless you keep on trekking, you will never find it.

Edison made 10,000 useless light bulbs before he found the one that worked.

J. K. Rowling sent Harry Potter to 20 publishers before one took her on.

They never gave up. Successful people don’t.

‘Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.’ Thomas Edison.

9. Think that you are more important than the customer.

Let’s be arrogant. We can tell our customers what they want, and they’ll thank us for it. Yeah right. And Ford still make only black cars!

I had lunch with the editor of a major British women’s magazine a few years ago and asked her how she responded to feedback from her readers.

‘My dear,’ she said, ‘I’m the editor. It is my job to tell them what they want, not the other way round.’

It came as no surprise that 6 months later she was fired, and a few months after that the magazine folded.

Don’t ever be guilty of corporate arrogance. Even the might Coca Cola company can be brought to heel by angry consumers (over the introduction in 1985 of New Coke). Just think what negative PR could do to you.

10. Sit back and wait for it to happen.

Whoever said ‘Build a better mousetrap and they’ll beat a path to your door’, had no idea of how business works.

You can have the best web site, the best book, the best store in the mall, but if you don’t tell anyone, so what?

The very word business means the state of being busy.

Marketing and innovation are the locks on the door of successful businesses. Action is the key that opens that door so that you can see, as Howard Carter put it when he opened the tomb of Tutankhamen, ‘Wonderful things.’

‘The individual activity of one man with backbone will do more than a thousand men with a mere wishbone.’ William J. H. Boetcker.

11. Listen to your peers.

Surely it is a good idea to listen to what your Dad has to say about your business? Or your sister, or doctor, or cab driver?

Everyone has an opinion. Unfortunately, most people are programmed to fail, and can’t see the positive aspect of anything.

If you allow other people’s negativity to infect your thinking, all of your endeavors are doomed. Most will probably never even get started.

It is vital that you have faith in what you are doing. If you have that faith, and you have seriously thought through all the issues, surround yourself with positive people and go for it.

12. Don’t belive you can succeed.

What has self-belief got to do with it? Either you have a successful business, or you don’t.

Trust me on this. If you have a cast-iron, unshakeable belief in your future success, then every action you take will be a positive one. It may take time, but you will be on the right path.

Nothing else is more important than this self-belief.

But, the moment you allow any doubt to creep in, you will instantly be on the road to failure.

Let’s give the last word to Abraham Lincoln who said, ‘Let no feeling of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end, you are sure to succeed.’
