Synchronicity of Happiness

I was 3000 miles from home and had an afternoon book signing to do. My morning was free and so the last minute decision was made to go to a meeting on spiritual healing. Unfamiliar with the roads, I was at least 5 minutes late. Another woman was also late. Determination was on our faces. And it was half a year later before the woman, Hannah, and I realized we were determined to meet one another. The meeting was frosting on the cake. Experience and hindsight has taught us, it wasn’t a coincidence of events that brought us together, but a synchronicity of motives.

These days my happiness quotient feels like it’s sailing off the charts. Maybe it seems I’m always rather cheerful. Trust me, I’ve ridden my share of emotional roller coasters. I’ve prided myself in being “very human,” which — in my mind — meant feeling every human emotion. But, maybe my husband is right. Maybe HAPPINESS IS the default state. Maybe if all resistance is simply removed from life, happiness naturally emerges. Somehow, it seems to be flowing steadily into my life.

Many times in my life I’ve been sad, down in the dumps and in a funky mood for days. But never have I been as profoundly unhappy as I was when I was in college. The pity party began freshman year, when the cute senior I was seeing mysteriously stopped speaking to me. My self-esteem did a nosedive and remained in the dungeon for the next several years. I dreaded my college town’s long, freezing winters, and was angered by the racism that left most Black students isolated from the mainstream of college life. My bitterness only intensified when I was one of the few Black women on campus not invited to be on the Omega Psi Phi Bunny Court. My grudges were endless. By the time I was a senior I was counting the days until I was out of there.
