If it is to be, it is up to me

I first read this statement in the book, Pure Power by James Lee Valentine. I was hooked from then on. It has become my motto and I hope you will make it yours too.

These may just be 10 2-letter words, but as one, it stands as a claim to our power to create the life we are meant to live. Contain in this simple statement is the message that we have the ability to fulfill our dreams.

We have the habit of leaving the fulfillment of our dreams to chance. Maybe that is the reason why our lives are mediocre. We go by the rules of “que sera sera” (whatever will be, will be) rather than “if it is to be, it is up to me” We strip ourselves of the right to take part in building our ideal life.

I once participated in a community outreach program in a very depressed area. One of our agenda is to teach skills that the people can use to earn income. We went from house to house inviting each family to participate. At least one of the families I have been to, declined our invitation saying, “If we are meant to live in poverty, then we will always be poor no matter what” It is so sad to hear that there are people who will just accept that the lives they are meant to live is one of poverty, scarcity & oppression.

We have been endowed with great potentials and we have been equipped with the power to realize these potentials. That is why we have the ability to attract & choose the circumstances that will affect our lives. Sad to say, choosing is the power we often willingly give up.

Attracting

It has been called a lot of things – the law of attraction, manifesting, conscious creation. Much has been said about it – for & against it. One has just to examine one’s life to observe that it is inherent in our existence that whatever most occupies our minds & accepted as facts & truths will be reflected in our reality.

Choosing

By choosing, I do not mean that you can tell fate to just give you all good things. You will not grow that way. However, what you do with the lemon that fate throws at you is your decision.

By exercising your power to choose what you focus on, you can manipulate your ability to attract to your advantage. For the statement “if it is to be, it is up to me” can work both ways. If it is to be poverty for the rest of your life, it is up to you to focus & accept poverty. If it is to be abundance for the rest of your life, it is also up to you to focus & accept abundance.

Taking Charge

I grew up being compared to my older brother who is an achiever. I was unappreciated, made to feel worthless & was openly criticized by my mother almost all of my school age years. As an adult, I had low self-esteem and I easily lose my confidence when I am with achievers. As expected my mother & I didn’t grow very close. I kept blaming her for my lack of self confidence & poor self esteem.

I had a very painful experience some years ago and my mother was at the heart of the matter. I was at the lowest ebb, but I had the opportunity to reexamine my life and it was then that I realized that I am already in control of my life. I may be helpless as a child & just accepted whatever my mother said, but as an adult I already know that I am not as worthless as she said I am. I’ve also learned to forgive her for what she did, after all she was also just a product of her own growing up years which I think was far from ideal too. If I don’t let go of the past, I will just perpetuate the cycle and my own children will suffer like I did.

I know that there are many people out there who may have similar experiences. You can choose to take charge now or you can choose to continually live a miserable life. There are also people out there that have just lost hope of ever improving their lives, you can keep your sense of hopelessness or you can choose to be free of hopelessness. Just keep in mind, “if it is to be, it is up to me”

Use the Power of Intention to Imagine Your Day

When you jump into your day unconsciously, most of your energy is used reacting to what happens “to you.” This constant reacting is draining and can soon lead to burnout. On the other hand, when you set an intention at the beginning of each day, you are consciously focusing your thoughts towards a desired direction….intentionally. By setting your intention daily you take action that can prove to be a powerful tool in creating a day that makes you feel good about your life, your self-esteem, your interactions with others, your sales etc.

As soon as you wake up, maybe when the alarm goes off but you’re not quite awake, or maybe when you are in the shower, begin to think about your day ahead. Here are some questions that can be helpful:
How will your energy be today?
What’s your mood?
How are you in your body?
What are your food choices?

Imagine your energy flowing evenly and balanced throughout the day. You feel good in your body and clothes. When you’re hungry you choose food that recharges and refreshes you. Imagine your commute to work as a cool, easy ride with the perfect flow of traffic, great music on the radio and your arrival on time.

What appointments are on your calendar?
What are your expectations of the day?
What’s on you schedule?
If you are in sales, how are your sales flowing today?
How will your important meeting flow?

You can set your intention every day, and throughout the day. If you are not able to visualize try journaling. If you can’t journal, speak your intentions out loud. Use the power of intention to imagine your day!

Top Ten Tips for Meditation

Published by Other Authors under Meditation, Spirituality

Meditation can simplify our lives and help us live in the eternal now. When we enter into real meditation we experience a real sense of peace and joy. To gain access to this inner reality meditation is necessary. These are some tips to help improve our meditation.

1. Proper Breathing. If we can carefully regulate our breathing this will be a great aid to our meditation. When we slow down and become conscious of our breathing, the mind naturally slows down and it is easier to control our thoughts. When we meditate our breath should be so gentle that if someone placed a feather by our mouth it would barely move.

2. Stop Thoughts entering. This is often easier said than done. However it is the essence of meditation. If we can learn to stop our mind from pursuing endless thought then we will be able to enter into real mediation; real meditation is inner silence. Sri Chinmoy says the essence of meditation is

“When we meditate we empty our minds and then fill our minds with something divine.” (1)

3. Mantra. The use of mantra can be of great help in quietening the relentless noise of the mind. A mantra is a sacred word or phrase repeated many times. By repeating a mantra we calm the mind and also make it one pointed. After chanting a mantra meditation will be easier.

4. Meditation Shrine. If we can create a sacred space for meditation we will gain added inspiration. A meditation shrine can be a small corner of a room we keep only for meditation. Over time we will find this space builds up a meditative consciousness helpful to our meditation.

5. Regularity. Like many other activities the more we practise meditation the better we will become. If we meditate sincerely everyday then we will find that our capacity to meditate increases. If our meditation is sporadic, progress is much more difficult.

6. Spiritual Heart. If we struggle to calm the mind and stop the unceasing flow of thoughts we can try meditating on the spiritual heart. We should try to feel our whole sense of awareness is leaving the mind and entering the heart. If we are able to meditate in the heart we will identify with the expansive and divine qualities the spiritual heart embodies.

7. Concentration. To meditate well we need to master the art of concentration. In essence concentration involves focusing on only one thing at a time. If we can be one pointed and not get distracted, then our meditation will become very powerful.

8. Inspiration. Meditation should be viewed as a lifelong process of self – discovery. It is important to try and maintain our enthusiasm and inspiration for meditation. We can do this by associating with other like minded people who also meditate. If we can find a real spiritual teacher this will also give us significant inspiration to meditate.

9. Never Give Up! Sometimes we meditate well but sometimes we feel meditation is most difficult. However it is important that we should not become discouraged just because of an unsuccessful meditation. Often we may be making progress, even if it is not always immediately obvious.

10. Intensity. Meditation doesn’t just mean sitting down quietly for 10mins. If we have real eagerness to experience the inner rewards of meditation, we will give it all our focus. When we feel this burning aspiration, our technique of meditation becomes less important. Instead our soul will come to the fore and our meditation will become spontaneous.
